This symposium brings together different speakers around the theme of the week of the Dutch book (boekenweek) The Mother. The Woman. (De Moeder. De Vrouw.). Three researchers critically discuss the tacit assumptions about women’s roles and attitudes contained in the title The Mother. The Woman. Professors Stier, Grunow and Jacobs present research showing how diverse women’s attitudes towards children are, how mothers and fathers prefer to divide paid and care work, and how often working parents care for other dependent relatives. Dr. Anne Roeters (SCP), Dr. Ellen Verbakel (Nijmegen University) and Mariëtte Hamer (President of the Socio-Economic Council, SER) will give comments and act as discussants. The symposium is organised by Janna Besamusca and supported by the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Labour Studies (AIAS-HSI), the Amsterdam Center for Inequality Studies (AMCIS), the Amsterdam Research Center for Gender and Sexuality (ARC-GS) and VOX POP.
