Jacob Cornelisz van Oostsanen (ca. 1475-1533)

De Renaissance in Amsterdam en Alkmaar

Jacob Cornelisz van Oostsanen was the first painter and printmaker in Amsterdam known by name. He owned a large workshop on Kalverstraat, worked for affluent burghers and churchmen in Amsterdam and the county of Holland. His firm was a family business, and as a businessman he knew what the market wanted. Around 35 of his paintings survive, and he produced over 200 woodcuts. His earliest dated paintings and prints are from 1507. Jacob also produced ceiling paintings in churches in Alkmaar and Warmenhuizen, and he designed painted roundels and compositions for embroidered church textiles.

This is the catalogue that accompanied the exhibition with works of Jacob Cornelisz in the Amsterdam Museum and the Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar, to be seen from 15 maart - 29 juni 2014.
