Irina Shapiro

Director of the Open Set Foundation

Irina Shapiro is a designer, curator and educator. Her recent practice combines developing various design projects and talent development programs outside and in-between institutional environments. Her background is in Printing Arts (Moscow State University of Printing Arts, RU), Scenography (Humanitarian Institute of TV and Radio, RU) and Graphic Design (Master at AKV|St.Joost, NL). Shapiro worked as an art and creative director for several commissioners, ranging from museums to publishers and private institutions. Her self-initiated projects have been presented in several institutions and at events such as the “Kunst in het Witte de Withkwartier Festival” in Rotterdam, the Gogbot Festival in Enschede (NL) and the Van Abbemuseum Eindhoven. In 2012 Irina Shapiro co-initiated Open Set – an independent design platform in Rotterdam, which explores the social value of (graphic) design and the multidisciplinary transformation of the profession. She curated educational programs and symposiums hosted at Het Huis voor Beeldcultuur Breda, Kunstblock Rotterdam and Leeum Museum Seoul (2016 Intermedia Theater – World Citizenship “Memories of the Future”), and in 2017 “Agents in the Anthropocene. Trans/disciplinary Practices in Art and Design Education Today”. Since 2016 she is involved in the Master of Education in Arts, Piet Zwart Institute as a seminar leader, graduation supervisor and curator of the graduation presentation.
