Good Neighbours

Good Neighbours is an interactive media project about neighbourhood surveillance. It explores how communities create spaces of belonging or alienation through technology. The project focuses on intimate surveillance practices enabled by WhatsApp groups in Amsterdam and Johannesburg. Using performance, ethnographic research and a chat-bot documentary Good Neighbours raises urgent questions about community-making.

Research questions include:

How do fear, paranoia and prejudice circulate in communities through mobile technology?
How are ‘our’ spaces claimed or reclaimed through technology?
What are the politics of mobility in neighbourhoods?

Good Neighbours launched in September 2019 at the Fak’ugesi African Digital Innovation Festival in Johannesburg. The completed chat-bot documentary, performance and installation will be presented to audiences in 2020. Good Neighbours is created in partnership with the Institute of Network Cultures and supported by the City of Amsterdam, the Creative Industries Fund NL and the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts.
