Pieter van Beukering

Pieter van Beukering is a Dutch economist with more than 20 years of experience in research and teaching in environmental economics. In 1993 he started as an economic research associate at the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) of the VU University, Amsterdam. In the March 2001, he successfully defended his Ph.D. dissertation on the economics of trade, recycling and the environment. His main research interests are natural resource management and economic valuation focused on ecosystem services and renewable energy. Between 2003 and 2009 worked as the director of the PREM research programme, aiming at strengthening capacity in developing countries for environmental economic research, involving some 80 international researchers in the “North” and “South”, focusing on sustainable development in 16 different countries in Asia and Africa. Between 2009 and 2014 he worked as the coordinator of the RENEW-IS Academy of the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs focusing on renewable energy in Sub-Saharan Africa involving 3 PhD students and about 50 international MSc students. Both programs are run by Pieter in direct consultation with and participation of national and regional policy makers and NGO’s, to facilitate effective knowledge transfer. Pieter plays a prominent role in the international network around The Economics of Ecosystem Services and Biodiversity (TEEB). In this context he has conducted numerous case studies on nature conservation on small islands in the Caribbean, for the governments of the Netherlands (Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, ), UK (British Virgin Islands, Anguilla) and US (US Virgin Islands). In 2013 Pieter was appointed as a direct advisor to the Secretary of State of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, advising the Dutch Government on the allocation of large sums of funding on nature protection in the Dutch Antilles. Since 2009 Pieter van Beukering is an Associate Professor lecturing environmental economics at the Faculty of Earth and Life Sciences (FALW) of the VU University. In 2015, he became the department head of the Environmental Economics Department. Since 2015 Pieter also acts as the director of the MSc programme Environment and Resource Management (ERM). After serving as Acting Director of IVM in 2016-2017, Pieter is currently deputy director of IVM. In 2019, Pieter was appointed Full Professor in Environmental Economics serving the Chair “Economics of Natural Capital”.
