Bsc Thesis - Sexual Remittances: The Case of Queer Migrants in Amsterdam
In this research I investigated the sexual remittances of queer migrants in Amsterdam, as they arrive in the city with their culturally situated notions of gender and sexuality. This influences their evolving queer identities in the city and subsequently shapes the adopted or appropriated gender and sexuality beliefs, norms, and practices they send back to their place of origin.
Below the pink-washed surface of Amsterdam's widespread reputation for being a safe haven for queer people from around the world, there exist the queer migrants who do not fit the bill. It is these subjects that are at the forefront of deconstructing mainstream heteronormativity, as they build transnational cultures which permeate and call into question the Dutch identity. This research uncovers the marginalized queer identities and experiences of those who deserve space and safety in a city which has built its name upon promises of inclusivity. I pose the following questions:
- In the case of Amsterdam's queer migrants, what does the process of sexual remittances entail?
- In which ways do queer migrants in Amsterdam transfer collective and individual sexual
remittances?
- In which ways do migration trajectories shape the sexual remittance process?Author: Nikolai von Moltke

BA Thesis - Amsterdam, the modern Fashion City
Full title: Amsterdam, the modern Fashion City: Analysis of the current significance of fashion cities and how Amsterdam relates to this
This research paper examines the role of fashion in relation to Amsterdam as a modern Fashion City with the aim to positively transform the current city reputation. The concept of a Fashion City has recently been revised, because of the emergence of second-tier Fashion Cities that have stimulated the formation of a polycentric fashion system. To find out what is the current significance of the concept, the paper incorporates results from an extensive literature review.
Parallel to this, the paper has attempted to define the fashion identity of Amsterdam by empirical as well as ethnographic research including semi-structured interviews and a digital survey. An exploration is given of the development of fashion in Amsterdam with a focus on how fashion in the city is symbolically produced by its local Cultural Creative Industries (CCIs). One of the findings is that collaboration between the CCIs is fundamental and it becomes clear that ‘the user’ of fashion in Amsterdam has always proved to be the innovator.
Based on these unique characteristics of the city, the paper concludes with an analysis of Amsterdam as a modern Fashion City and proposes an alternative Ideal Type of the concept by branding the city of Amsterdam as an ‘Inspiration City’.autor: Vita van de Sandt

Bsc Thesis - Multi-Objective Path Planning Algorithm for Accessible Sidewalks
Suppose you want to go to the Rijksmuseum on foot. Navigation apps determine the shortest path from your location to the Rijksmuseum based on one objective (i.e., criterion), which is most often the length of the path. However, considering only the length of the path is often not sufficient for people with mobility issues and those who use assistive devices, such as wheelchairs, strollers, and canes. They have different and many needs with respect to the accessibility of sidewalks. For example, they might prefer to take a longer path which has fewer crossings than a shorter path with more crossings. They might even prefer to take only those sidewalks which have a certain width. Hence, this accessibility, and especially the lack thereof, of the paths results in additional and different objectives. This research is part of the broader project Amsterdam For All, which aims to help Amsterdam citizens with mobility issues to find the most accessible sidewalks, with respect to their specific needs. To cater to different people, this will be done through a highly user-dependent app. The focus of this research is on creating an interactive algorithm which can output only those paths the users are likely to prefer to take, given their specific accessibility needs, from and to their desired destinations.

Bsc Thesis - Work to live or live to work?
Full title: Work to live or live to work? A comparison study between Ph.D. candidates in China and the Netherlands
This paper investigates how structural uncertainty and inequalities affect work-life balance experiences among PhD students in different social-political contexts. Specifically, it compares the experiences of Chinese PhD students in the Netherlands, where work-life balance is legally and culturally supported, with those in China, characterized by rapid economic growth, high competition, and limited resources.
By conducting 12 semi-structured interviews, this study reveals that restrictions and power imbalances contribute to wider economic inequalities and greater uncertainties among CN-CN interviewees, resulting in the lowest level of work-life balance. Conversely, NL-NL PhDs enjoy higher levels of work-life balance due to their autonomy and labor empowerment. In between, CN-NL participants experiences both restrictions and autonomy as non-labor identities in labor protecting welfare, resulting in a middle range of work-life balance. Finally, the paper concludes by suggesting several policy reforms that could help alleviate the structural constraints faced by Chinese PhD students.Author: Xiaoke Wu
