CUS Workshop: Digital Technologies and Urban Politics

29 nov 2018 09:00 - 17:00

This workshop questions what are the political implications of the growing use of digital technologies for the way in which cities are governed and citizens engaged.

Urban infrastructures – from electricity and water to security and tourism infrastructures – increasingly rely on digital technology. Security cameras, digital meters, smartphone apps, and participatory online maps: these devices and technologies mediate how city dwellers relate to urban governance actors, how they become part of various urban communities, and how city governments and corporate actors experiment with new ways of grappling with urban issues. These technological shifts are often framed as neutral, apolitical fixes, highlighting the need for a critical scholarly engagement with the new ‘digital urbanism’. Therefore, this workshop questions: What are the political implications of the growing use of digital technologies for the way in which cities are governed and citizens engaged? What forms of political subjectivities and modes of governance emerge when urban relations are increasingly mediated through digital technologies?
