From 6 to 11 February it's the Week of the Circular Economy. In this collection, openresearch provides an overview of this theme.
'Circular' is a commonly used term. In this collection, openresearch provides an overview of the various ways in which circularity is discussed and contributes to a circular economy. The circular economy refers to an economic system in which the value of products and materials is preserved for as long as possible and waste and the use of resources are kept to a minimum. Resources or products are also kept in the economy at the end of their lifespan, so that they can be reused several times and thus continue to be of value.
In this collection you can read how the City of Amsterdam is implementing the government-wide program 'Nederland Circulair 2050', and which tools (instruments) exist and are used that contribute to this objective.
How has the housing market developed in the past two years and how satisfied are Amsterdammers with their living environment?
The increasing attractiveness of Amsterdam and, in particular, the improving economy have major effects on the city. Three years ago, for example, there was a financial crisis that led to a crisis in the construction industry. There was hardly any construction or transformation. However, for a few years now, investors have been queuing up to start building again. More houses have been built in the last two years than in the previous four years combined. More supply helps to meet demand. Despite the major sprint in new construction, house prices in the owner-occupied sector have risen explosively. The average WOZ value in Amsterdam has increased by more than 27% in the last two years alone. For many people, buying a house is no longer an option, despite the historically low interest rates.
Not only in Amsterdam, but throughout the Netherlands, we face major challenges to provide everyone with a sustainable and affordable home. In this collection you will find studies by the city council, Amsterdam knowledge institutes and national organizations about housing. You will also find articles on various themes related to housing such as the housing crisis, equal opportunities, sustainability, office spaces and housing for students, the elderly and the homeless in Amsterdam.

Each person in Amsterdamer deserves the opportunity to develop himself/herself irrespective of his or her background.
That is one of the main challenges in Amsterdam. In a fair city, everyone has the same opportunities and possibilities, regardless of where you were born, the neighborhood you grew up in and the network around you. People from all income groups, education levels and types of migration background should be able to live, participate, develop and shape their own future in the city.

Worldwide there are millions of refugees fleeing their homeland. Many of them live in Amsterdam.
The refugee issue shows us that we still have a lot to do to get things done. Despite the constant current events, we are not always prepared for a new flow of refugees. However, many steps have been taken in terms of involvement and responsibility. In the Netherlands, many organizations and research bureaus are active in this matter, such as the UAF for student refugees, the Netherlands Council for Refugees, the Verwey Jonker Institute, the Knowledge Platform for Integration and Society, the Advisory Committee for Immigration Affairs, the Social and Cultural Planning Office and the Refugee Foundation.
In this collection you will find a wide range of relevant research and interesting documents. Here you will also find all the research that has been discussed in the city council of Amsterdam.

Opinions on this vary widely; some people think that multilingualism is an asset while others think it is an obstacle that leads to disadvantages at school. That is why research is highly needed. In this dossier, there are several collections that approach multilingualism from different angles, such as those related to education, communication and the best ways of dealing with multilingualism so far.

The city of Amsterdam was involved in the slave trade and slavery from the end of the sixteenth century until the nineteenth century.
As the main seat of the West India Company (WIC) and co-owner of the Suriname Society, Amsterdam was directly involved in the transatlantic slave trade. In addition, countless Amsterdammers were directly or indirectly involved in slavery and slave trade in East and West.
In this collection we dive deeper into the history of Amsterdam's slavery, in particular the disaster of the slave ship Leusden in 1738. Below you will find the original thesis on which the expedition is based. You can also find the AT5 broadcasts on slavery and a collection with links for more information on slavery and the postcolonial history of Amsterdam.
