Innovation and Development

Over the next few years, the municipality is going to invest heavily in Amsterdam's bridges and quay walls, by accelerating the large-scale repair of 200 kilometers of quay wall and 850 traffic bridges. These quay walls and bridges are important for the accessibility of the city. Many of these bridges and quay walls are more than 100 years old and partly at the end of their lifespan. They are increasingly heavily used and heavily loaded. Due to past budget cuts and backlogs in maintenance, a special approach to the historic bridges and quay walls is desperately needed. Safety and mapping the condition of the structures is important in the coming years.

Innovation
Scaling up the approach and acceleration requires different ways of working, innovation is needed. This will not happen by itself. Within the Bridges and Quays program, we want to shape the innovation process by working together with knowledge institutions, market parties and citizens.

Living Labs and Living Labs
A Living Lab consists of knowledge questions around a specific theme, such as testing or life extension. Within each LL, research is conducted together with knowledge institutions and market players to gain more insight into the problem and new solutions. These solutions are then tried out in practice, a so-called living lab. A living lab is characterized by applying a new physical or process solution at a specific location in the city. The results of the living labs are evaluated within the living lab and, if successful, are widely used within Amsterdam.
