The sum of its parts: counts by citizen scientists

Citizens throughout the Netherlands contribute to science. They do this by counting: in their own garden, around their house or in nature. Together they collect data on a large scale and thus map out the situation with, for example, traffic, the number of frogs, the breeding grounds of birds and so on. A number of projects are highlighted below.

Telraam: traffic counts

Telraam is a solution (with citizens) for collecting multimodal traffic data with a purpose-built device. Individual citizens can buy their own Telraam device and count the traffic in the street themselves via the Telraam platform. The data can be used for a.o. traffic models, safer streets and cleaner air. (Source: Telraam.net)

Counts in nature

Waarneming.nl is the largest nature platform in the Netherlands and part of the Observation International Foundation. Volunteers conduct a multitude of nature observations worldwide. When this information can be collected and shared, this data forms a powerful tool for nature conservation, research, policy, education and experience. (Source: Waarneming.nl)

De Tuintelling maps out what birds, butterflies, mammals, amphibians and insects live in the gardens of the Netherlands. It is the largest garden survey in the Netherlands. The organization consists of employees of Vogelbescherming Nederland, Sovon Vogelonderzoek Nederland, Ravon, Floron, EIS, Mammal Association and the Butterfly Foundation. (Source: De Tuintelling)

Counting water animals: which aquatic animals live in the ditch tells you something about the quality of the water. This is what IVN does with children and (grand)parents in the ditch survey.
