The platform consists of three layers. Each time material is uploaded, users choose the layer in which the material will be visible.
- Layer 1: work in progress ("gray" layer): Share material within a project space, with all members of a research project (editors, participants, stakeholders). Material on this layer is shown in gray on the platform.
- Layer 2: share within platform (‘red’ layer): Share material research with participants of openresearch. This is visible to all civil servants and researchers working at a government organisation or knowledge institution within the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area. They can ask for feedback and give each other. Material on this layer is shown in red on the platform.
- Layer 3: publish on the Internet (full colour): Material on this layer can be seen by everyone. Material on this layer is shown in full colour on the platform.
