A natural future for the Netherlands in 2120

A new narrative for the Netherlands

The Netherlands has always been able to adapt well to the climate, but the increase in greenhouse gas emissions and global warming due to human activities are unprecedented. Rising sea levels, greater risk of weather extremes and rising temperatures threaten the economy and the environment
well-being in our country. This presents us with challenges we have not seen before. We must advocate mitigation and adaptation, in other words: reducing greenhouse gas emissions and making adjustments to cope with the consequences of climate change.

Wageningen University & Research (WUR) has developed a vision of the future for the Netherlands in 2120. What will the Netherlands look like in a century's time, and how will our country grow and flourish? Which developments can we respond to in the next ten decades to avoid or withstand extreme situations and growing uncertainties? What are the challenges, what transitions do we have to go through and what solutions are available?
