Bsc Thesis - Memories of asylum

By Kamyab Moteabbed

Full title: Memories of asylum: a retrospective examination on how national belonging developed among former asylum-seeking children in the Netherlands.

This thesis explores how asylum seekers who spent an extended amount of their childhood (at least over a year) in the Asylum Seekers Centre [AZC] develop their sense of national belonging to both their countries of origin and especially the Netherlands.

In doing so, it reveals major implications of the AZC system of the Netherlands, as well as how broader Dutch society functions to replace the bonds established to origin countries. In general, it provides valuable data on migration and diaspora studies and sheds light on demographics existing within a realm between national belongings.

Since Amsterdam contains 2000 places for asylum seekers in Asylum Seekers Centres, this paper may be relevant when discussing the day-to-day experiences of asylum seekers and especially the children who inhabit these institutions.
