Essay by Markha Valenta (Dutch)
This essay describes the harrowing reality of undocumented citizens. The national migration policy makes it impossible for them to take control of their own lives. They are not allowed to have a job, open a bank account, have a home and are not allowed to get medicines from the pharmacy. This situation can last for years. This essay examines how, despite the strict national migration policy, a municipal policy regarding undocumented migrants can still be created that is based on human dignity. The essay concludes with a number of recommendations with which a start can be made on a humane municipal policy.
