Help-Seeking Undocumented Migrants in the Netherlands

[Full title: Help-Seeking Undocumented Migrants in the Netherlands: Mental Health, Adverse Life Events, and Living Condition]

Undocumented migrants are a particularly vulnerable group when it comes to (mental) health, living conditions and limited access to healthcare. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence and correlates of mental health problems in a population of undocumented migrants seeking help. It is an observational study that integrated questionnaire data with retrospective data from electronic patient records.

Undocumented migrants attending medical and psychological consultation hours of a Dutch non-governmental organization completed the Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ). Associations with mental health were estimated using parametric tests.

Mental health problems are common among undocumented migrants seeking help. This research highlights the need to improve access to mental health care for undocumented migrants.
