KNMI '23 -Climate Scenarios for the Netherlands

The climate has already changed and we notice this in the increase in extremes in heat, drought and precipitation. So-called climate attribution has shown that the frequency of extreme weather has already increased as a result of human-induced climate change. The KNMI'23 climate scenarios show what else awaits the Netherlands if greenhouse gas emissions continue to increase at the current pace until 2080. They also show that the extent to which the climate will change will be much less if the world adheres to the Paris Climate Agreement (low emissions, figure 3). All four scenarios show that we will in any case have to deal with sea level and temperature rise, drier summers and wetter winters (table 2). Only the size of the change differs per scenario (figure 2). The climate scenarios enable users to map the consequences of changes in climate and extreme weather in a changing climate and to make decisions to keep the Netherlands safe, sustainable and habitable in the future.
