The urban challenge we address in this research is to enhance the sense of security in a specific neighbourhood by stimulating social cohesion through the creation of shared rhythms. There are many ways for analysing rhythms. From medical examinations of breath, to identifying the tides in the sea, to analysing rhythms in traffic or electricity use. Rhythm is sensed and analysed in many ways.
This research aims to identify of methods of analyses of rhythms, intervention in rhythms and it wants to formulate how rhythm analyses is a new resource for urban policymaking.
Do you have research, ongoing projects of material about rhythm that should be here? Or do you want to get involved? Please send an email to the editors: openresearch@amsterdam.nl
What values do we need to live together - with each other, with the earth and all the different life forms around us? And how do we do that in times of the climate crisis and other piling crises, which also have major social consequences? From spring 2020 to summer 2021, more than 100 artists and scientists collaborated to try and answer these questions.
This collection contains much of the material that was consulted and created for the 'Values for Survival' research program, in particular Cahier 3 - 'Tuning Into Rhythm'.
Amsterdam parallel research program to the Dutch Pavilion - 17th Venice Architecture Biennale
This research program is commissioned by Het Nieuwe Instituut and developed in collaboration with the City of Amsterdam. The Dutch contribution to the Biennale, 'Who is We?' is organized by Het Nieuwe Instituut. As part of the Dutch contribution 'Who is We?', Het Nieuwe Instituut asked the Chief Science Officer of the City of Amsterdam to orchestrate the additional research program. In response to the main question of the 17th Architecture Biennale 'How will we live together?' and the counter question of the Dutch Pavilion 'Who is We?', the Chief Science Officer has devised the theme 'Values for Survival'. This collection contains various elements of the research program 'Values for Survival'.
