Policy Framework - Space for pedestrians

City Council 29 June 2023

A pre-requisite for all pedestrians is accessibility. Pedestrians must be able to move comfortably and safely through our city, even if they use a wheelchair, push a pram or carry shopping bags. This means in the first place that the pedestrian in Amsterdam needs sufficient space, especially where it gets busier and many functions converge. This policy framework determines how much pedestrian clearance space is needed, depending on the number of pedestrians using a sidewalk. In this way, we want to prevent the pedestrian from being a closing point when planning in public space. If the street is redesigned (refurbishment), attention is paid to many interests, such as space for public transport, motorized traffic, bicycle traffic, bicycle parking, greenery, displays and terraces. As a result, pedestrian interests sometimes come under pressure.
