How the paradigm of city science contributes to climate resilience
Many social challenges are urban. Thus, the science, policy and innovation to address them must also be urban and regional centered. How does the interface of science and policy relate to the challenges we face when talking about climate resilience and neutrality?
This meeting will be opened by Philippe Froissard, Director-General of Research & Innovation at the European Commission. During this session, local authorities from, among others, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Paris, Thessaloniki, Espoo give a testimony about their challenges, experiences and their vision towards climate neutrality. We talk about cooperation between the European Commissions and the cities, with, among others, Head of Unit of Territoral Development of the Joint Research Centre, Alessandro Rainoldi. The session is moderated by Farid Tabarki.
We investigate new ways of working together and what this requires from a social, economic and legal perspective. Based on the publication 'Urban and Regional Research Ecology', which was published in May 2022, the concluding remarks and insights to take with you are provided by the undersigned. The language of the meeting is English. Below you can read more about where to register and about the background of this meeting and the week.Do you want to participate online?
Participation is free and you can register for it. Once you are registered, you can easily find the meeting by using the workshop code 12WS22434. For registration click [HERE]
Background: Amsterdam participation in 100 Climate Neutral Cities
In April 2022, Amsterdam was selected by the European Commission to participate in the Cities Mission of 100 climate neutral cities by 2030. With this, Amsterdam, along with 99 other cities, takes on the role as a catalyst of the transition to climate neutrality across Europe 2050. In the meeting 'How the paradigm of city science can contribute to a climate neutral city', this forms the framework from which the company enters into dialogue.
About the European Week of Regions and Cities (#EURegionWeek)
Local and regional authorities are of great importance for good governance in Europe. During this European Week, regions and cities share their experiences and knowledge about how they translate EU policies into practice. Since its first edition in 2003, this event has grown into a networking platform that brings regions and cities from all over Europe together. This week's central themes are (1) Green transition, (2) Regional cohesion, (3) Digital transition and (4) Empowerment of young people. These themes are discussed in many workshops, information sessions and lab sessions. The aim is to discuss, together with decision-makers, experts and implementers, the common challenges for Europe's regions and cities and explore possible solutions.

EU Research & Innovation for and with cities
The report 'EU Research & Innovation for and with Cities' provides an overview of the main EU Research and Innovation (R&I) actions for and with cities to help them accelerate their transition towards sustainability and climate neutrality. These actions, together with urban related policies across the European Commission Services, contribute to the implementation of targets of international frameworks (such as the COP21 Paris Agreement, the Sustainable Development Goals 2030 (SDGs), the UN Habitat III new Urban Agenda) to which cities, have committed and which will help deliver on the European Green Deal objectives.
In this collection you will find an overview of all chapters. To make the report more accessible, you will also find articles from all the projects, programs, organizations, etc. mentioned in each chapter. These articles are also organized by theme.
With special thanks to Marie Yeroyanni, DG research and Innovation -

100 Climate Neutral Cities
Reaching 100 climate-neutral cities by 2030 is the objective identified by the Mission Board for climate-neutral and smart cities. A Mission in this area would support, promote and showcase 100 European cities in their systemic transformation towards climate neutrality by 2030 and make these cities into experimentation and innovation hubs for all cities.
Cities are the place where decarbonisation strategies for energy, transport, buildings and even industry and agriculture coexist and intersect. The climate emergency must be tackled within cities and by engaging citizens who are not only political actors in a governance structure, but also users, producers, consumers and owners. Through a multi-level and co-creative process formalised in a Climate City Contract, adjusted to the realities of each city, the Mission is fully anchored on the European Green Deal Strategy to make Europe climate neutral by 2050.What are EU-Missions?
EU-missions are a new way to bring concrete solutions to some of our greatest challenges. They have ambitious goals and will deliver tangible results by 2030.
They will deliver impact by putting research and innovation into a new role, combined with new forms of governance and collaboration, as well as by engaging citizens.
EU Missions are a novelty of the Horizon Europe research and innovation programme for the years 2021-2027.
