The role of municipalities in the refugee integration process. Refugee integration policies in European cities: the Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Rome and London experience

"Several studies have already demonstrated that integration of refugees takes place principally at the local rather than national level (e.g. De Graauw & Vermeulen 2016; Alencar & Tsagkoni 2019). As De Graauw & Vermeulen (2016) point out, for most immigrants the lived experience of integration is inherently local. The municipality of Amsterdam has developed a local approach in response to the refugee crisis of 2015 and implemented local integration programs focusing on housing, employment, language and education, assigning refugees dedicated case managers. From July 1st 2021 the municipality will be fully responsible for the whole integration process of refugees. The question is how and to what extent does the municipality play a role within the integration process? Are there particular areas in this process which help define the municipality’s role? Are some aspects better left to other organizations, such as local initiatives? What can Amsterdam learn from the approach of other European cities?"
Deze passage komt uit het onderzoeksvoorstel van Samia Benhayyoun, dat hieronder te vinden is. Benhayyoun werkt bij de Gemeente Amsterdam en schrijft in deeltijd een proefschrift over een onderwerp dat van belang is voor de stad Amsterdam.
Haar onderzoek richt zich op de vraag hoe en in hoeverre de gemeente Amsterdam nu en in de toekomst zorg moet dragen voor het integratieproces van vluchtelingen, en hoe dit zich verhoudt tot andere Europese steden.
