Nightlife culture in Amsterdam

Municipal Council October 6, 2021

With this night vision, the Amsterdam Council first and foremost gives nightlife culture the recognition it deserves. We are the first city in the Netherlands to formulate an integrated vision on the value and importance of nightlife culture for the city. In doing so, we are following the footsteps of other cities with a long tradition of a vibrant night culture, such as Berlin, London and New York. The aim of this vision is to identify the most important themes for the sector and the city, so that now and in the future, we will be able to secure night culture more firmly and more integrally in municipal policy. This concerns art and culture as well as numerous other policy areas, such as diversity, urban development, economy, traffic, health and public order. With this nightlife vision, the council offers - sometimes invisible or unknown - night culture a platform to indicate what is needed for the development of a flourishing professional sector in the future. In addition, the nightlife vision provides an overview of the current versatile and extensive policy relating to the nightlife in Amsterdam. The study Value of the small hours (2021), commissioned by the City of Amsterdam, carried out by Atlas Research (formerly Atlas for municipalities) is an important part of the inventory and substantiates the economic value of night culture

Discussed in the Municipal Council of October 6, 2021 and the Art, Diversity and Democratization Committee of September 1, 2021
