Gareth Davies became Professor of Petrology in 2004 after heading the mass spectrometry department at the VU for 12 years. Since 2004 the group has grown from an initial 4 to ~ 30 now including 11 permanent lecturing-research-technical staff. The re-organisation of Earth Sciences in 2012 formed the Deep Earth and Planetary Science cluster (~ 35 FTE) which he now heads under the new name of Geology and Geochemistry.
