MSc Thesis by Lise Everloo
This thesis focuses on fostering self-organising capacity within the community to create renewable energy communities (RECs) in Amsterdam Southeast. Within Amsterdam Southeast, the Groene Hub, a local initiative, plays a pivotal role in linking energy transition efforts with social impact. Hereby they provide a platform to bridge the research gap of how to achieve or improve self-organising capacity in Amsterdam Southeast.
Guided by theories on self-organisation, champions, and energy justice, the research uses qualitative analysis through thematic coding of stakeholder interviews. Findings underscore the necessity of community collaboration, effective communication, and trust-building to enhance self-organisation. The study also highlights the importance of addressing gender disparities and involving young people in the energy transition.
Key recommendations for the Groene Hub include using culturally and socially appropriate communication, empowering local champions with resources and training, engaging children in community activities, and strengthening social capital by providing community interaction spaces.
