Manual on Public-Civil Cooperation

Designing strong collaborations between social initiatives and governments

Scientific research in the field of social transitions shows the need for new models for changing roles and responsibilities for the parties involved. However, these studies fail to make the knowledge and insights applicable to changing governance within social transitions.

The creative industry has an important role to play here. With its knowledge and use of design methods, the creative industry acts as a driver and link to connect the different interests and allow the parties involved to participate as equal partners in this transition. In that context, Waag Futurelab has taken the initiative for the Public-Civil Cooperation research project. This project investigated new knowledge and process models that support sustainable cooperation between citizens and governments to realize successful participation.

The research resulted in the Public-Civil Cooperation Handbook: a book full of inspiration, examples, support and design methods to strengthen public-civil partnerships. The handbook provides support to social initiatives, civil servants and policymakers, but also to financiers and local entrepreneurs who are active in areas where citizens, companies and governments meet. Consider the energy transition or the housing market: domains where new working methods are being sought to tackle complex issues.
