The goal of this project is to solve both the growing demand for food production and the greenhouse gas emissions from the agricultural sector, by using vertical farming. Although vertical farming is water efficient, nutrient efficient, highly productive, and does not require herbicides or pesticides, the method needs to be made energy-efficient.

This paper researches the carbon emission of vertical farming. It is published as part of the SKY HIGH project. The goal of this project is to solve both the growing demand for food production and the greenhouse gas emissions from the agricultural sector, by using vertical farming. SKY HIGH: Local Food Production in Amsterdam (AMS Institute)
Deze presentatie begint met een uitleg waarom er een nieuwe visie op voedselproductiesystemen nodig is en waar deze aan moet voldoen. Hierin wordt aangegeven dat verticale landbouw momenteel een fase is in een reeks van meer dan 100 jaar tuinbouw ontwikkelingen Nederland. Er bestaan bovendien meerdere verschijningsvormen van verticale landbouw, variërend van eenvoudige thuistoepassingen tot volledig geautomatiseerde implementaties zoals bij GROWx. Professor Marcelis noemt daarbij de huidige knelpunten van verticale landbouw en illustreert aan de hand van een nieuw onderzoekproject in Amsterdam, genaamd Sky High, hoe hij deze knelpunten wil onderzoeken en er nieuwe oplossingen voor wil bedenken.

SKY HIGH (AMS Institute)
This is a video about the SKY HIGH project. In this project plants are grown vertically to bring agriculture to the city and to prevent soil from being worn out. The plants are automatically given light, water and manure. The SKY HIGH program is a collaboration between various organisations, like Wageningen University and Research and AMS Institute.
