Metropolitan Solutions: Schinkelkwartier Integrated Urban Development

This Schinkelkwartier case study was commissioned by the Municipality of Amsterdam as an interdisciplinary project for the students of the MSc. Metropolitan Analysis, Design and Engineering. In alignment with the Terms of Reference created by AMS Institute in collaboration with the Municipality of Amsterdam, students focused on five key themes: Climate Risk, Mobility, Innovative Living & Working, Energy, and Social Inclusion. They were organized into groups, each is dedicated to one of these themes, along with an additional group tasked with integrating all the themes into a comprehensive synthesis report to be presented to the municipality at the conclusion of the course. The aim is to create a plan for an integrated urban development approach for Schinkelkwartier in accordance with the citizens’ activities, municipal ambitions, and business demands.
Within the course students were able to uncover important insights and develop recommendations that build upon the current municipal plans, that have already partially been set into motion. After in-depth analysis of the area conducted by five different expert groups, gaps and opportunities were identified within the current municipal plans and developed a vision that aligns with the ambitions of the municipality:
Schinkelkwartier shall be developed into a liveable, flexible, and sustainable district,
which is inclusive and safe for all users.
To realize and incorporate this vision in the current development strategy, students came up with 8 recommendations accompanied by specific actions. In these recommendations focus is being given to the protection of green spaces, development of financial climate models, collaborative governance between private and public sector, inclusivity though community participation, increased connection with the rest of the Amsterdam region, flexibility of mobility and buildings, as well as room for bottom-up initiatives that enhance innovation.
This composition of perspectives and proposed actions are presented within a timeframe of 3 phases: planning phase, construction phase and utilisation phase. These are aligned with the existing goals and deadlines of the municipality.
