"The Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism holds a unique place in the international events scene. It is committed to the theme of Urban Planning, considering the city of tomorrow as a collective invention. This is why it seemed right to me today to place its third edition under the theme of Resilience."

Dominique Perrault, General Director of the Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism 2021.

The SBAU 2021, entitled "CROSSROADS Building the Resilient City", will attempt to respond to the complexity of the relationships that shape our cities and to the key time that humanity is currently facing by drafting a manifesto for a more sustainable city. The Biennale will promote the theme of "CROSSROADS", considering cities and metropolises as spaces of superposition, complex and constructed interactions between inhabitants, buildings, infrastructures, movements and regulations.

Among the 5 Crossroads promoted, Amsterdam is participating as Guest City on Crossroad 1 on Urbanism.

Crossroad 1 on urbanism: ABOVE/BELOW

The theme Above/Below will explore architectural and urban planning approaches that explore the potential interconnections between the above and below ground layers of the city: a strategy to increase city density and programmatic connections, while limiting urban sprawl.

Guest Cities Exhibition

The Guest Cities Exhibition is a networking platform for cities. The Seoul Metropolitan Government hosts dozens of cities from around the world to come together and share their experiences and knowledge toward the common goal of preparing their cities for the unknown future as they face the challenge of climate change, natural disasters, health crises, as well as breathtaking technological advances in artificial intelligence, automation, and urban mobility.
