Code the Streets

Presentation by Iris de Ruysch

The city faces many challenges when it comes to mobility. For example, the fact that within 3 years, 10.000 accidents occured within school zones. Or that the carbon emissions of congested areas are 200% higher than in other areas. These issues are being tackled by many innovations, such as hubs or smart loading zones. The approach of Code the Streets is to lead travelers to their destination by providing alternative routes.

This presentation was given during the European Innovation and Technology Urban Mobility Showcase event. The event was hosted at AMS Institute.

The alternative routes provided can be changed depending on criteria. For example, code the streets was tested in both Amsterdam and Helsinki. In Amsterdam, the objective was to provide more safety by letting setting the system up to avoid certain areas at certain times. For example: to avoid school zones at busy hours.

In Helsinki, the system was set up to avoid congestion by gathering data to discover incentives people have to leave home later or to take another route.

By the end of both experiments 40% of the school zones were safer, because 40% of the people chose to avoid the school areas.
