Reclaiming Public Space with Shared Cars

Calculating the Car Replacement Ratio for Amsterdam

Amsterdam is growing rapidly. The demand for mobility is increasing, and the need for a more accessible city is pressing. The cost of transportation continues to rise, while affordability and inclusivity remain paramount. Meeting these needs requires a scarce resource in Amsterdam: public space. Making space will require us to forge a new path forward on the journey towards a car-free city which emphasizes walking, cycling, public transport, and shared mobility. Currently, private cars take up a disproportionate amount of public space that could be used for other purposes. Making space, by reducing the footprint of private cars, is dependent on many factors, including the availability and use of shared cars. Other key factors include flanking policies like paid parking and permit availability, in addition to the availability of public transport and neighborhood density, which both impact car dependency.
