For this expert report, the Kleurenbuurt serves as a case study to illustrate what strategies can be applied to make a post-war neighbourhood in the Netherlands more climate resilient. The Kleurenbuurt in general is in a relatively favourable position regarding climate challenges, however, thinking in systems, interventions on the local Kleurenbuurt scale are needed to be climate resilient on the larger Zaanstad scale.
The task of reviewing its environmental characteristics to determine its resilience and how to improve it responds to the relationship to the Strategic Challenges posed by the municipality of Zaanstad of Urbanization, Sustainability, and Health (Peters & Chen, 2022).
The proposed toolbox of interventions and the emphasis on urban ecosystem services show the municipality could effectively tackle future climate challenges. The Kleurenbuurt serves as an exemplary neighbourhood, of which its successful interventions can be applied to other areas in Zaanstad or similar contexts.
