Data science has increased in both its presence and potential for impact on the urban environment.
However, in some cases the increased availability of data has outpaced the ability to process and
present what information is available. Visualizing data in a meaningful and clear way has become
pivotal in communicating the power of data science to wider audiences as well as uncovering
previously overlooked connections. Proper data visualization can both improve the understanding of
problem origins while also assisting in making informed decisions to improve circularity and
sustainability in urban regions.
The goal of this course is to improve the insight, understanding, and the communication of data. This
course focuses on a range of sustainability themes and data visualization methods to help students
understand the power of this skill and improve their capabilities in processing and presenting data.
Students are presented with datasets connected to a real world case study and then process them
using various data visualization methods to see the impact of different methods on the interpretation
of the data. This course uses a variety or programs including but not limited to Python, R, Excel,
Tableau, Mapbox, Blender, etc.
