Societal Challenge 6 Work Programme of Horizon 2020 allocated more than EUR 100M on projects that addressed the challenges and opportunities in urban areas. The funded projects identified approaches and practices, which could be applied in both cities and rural communities and provided scenarios for urban development policy making. Particularly, they analysed socio-economic inequalities and provided solutions for the prevention of social exclusion as well as the enhancement of social and spatial justice in EU cities.

This chapter is part of the report 'EU research & innovation for and with cities' that provides an overview of the main EU Research and Innovation (R&I) actions for and with cities to help them accelerate their transition towards sustainability and climate neutrality.
