Amsterdam Infection and Immunity
An unbalanced immune system is the basis for many infections, inflammatory diseases and also cancer. Due to global threats such as emerging infectious pathogens and increased antibiotic resistance, the need for new vaccination strategies and antimicrobial drugs is urgent. In addition, there is an unmet potential and need for novel innovative immune therapies and vaccination strategies to treat cancer. Chronic inflammatory diseases have increased over the years in most developed countries and not only severely reduce quality of life but are a high burden on the health care systems. The need to focus and combine research activities in inflammatory diseases, infectious diseases and cancer immunity is crucial in order to identify common and novel immune correlates and pathways to work towards innovative treatment regimens.
The Amsterdam Infection & Immunity Institute will create a superb environment for young talented researchers enabling high level multidisciplinary basic, preclinical and clinical research on fundamental aspects of infectious diseases and immunity during infection, auto-inflammation and cancer. Although these diseases warrant different therapies, the underlying principles are often shared and/or may involve the same tissues. Thus, the Amsterdam Infection & Immunity Institute will intensify this unique “inter-disease” scientific environment for accommodating multidisciplinary research. -

Cancer Center Amsterdam
Cancer Center Amsterdam is an oncology center that aims to create new possibilities. Inspired by today’s patients we develop, research and share new insights on how to prevent, detect, cure and live with cancer. The more insights we have, the better we can educate the next generation of specialists.
Researchers, doctors, caregivers and professors share one goal: a better future for cancer-patients. Inspired and often aided by today’s patients, we want to develop possibilities for future patients. -

Amsterdam Cardiovascular Sciences
The mission of Amsterdam Cardiovascular Sciences is to design knowledge-based treatment strategies to prevent and cure cardiovascular diseases. For this purpose, education, research and clinical activities are concentrated in five Research Programs that not only translate experiments to clinical interventions, but also use clinical observations to develop and validate novel biological concepts. In this framework, we interconnect excellence in clinical and basic research and provide a unique infrastructure to train and attract talented cardiovascular researchers. Having successfully achieved this a number of times, we further expect that our translational research approach will lead to discovery and proof of concept of innovative effective strategies, which improve cardiovascular health.

Amsterdam Neuroscience
The mission of Amsterdam Neuroscience is clear: to improve understanding of the human brain and nervous system in health and disease by executing integrated basic, translational and clinical research.
We do this by bringing together more than 850 clinicians, faculty and staff in the Amsterdam area, producing 1300+ publications per year, and performing research and clinical care amongst the best in the Netherlands and beyond. Our investigators target and organize their collaborations along nine translational research programs, each focused in specific brain and nervous system disease mechanisms but also on technology innovation and basic research. We contribute to generating deep understanding of brain mechanisms at all levels of study, from molecular, to cellular studies to circuitry and intact brain and behavior. From there the latest scientific insights are translated into novel diagnostics and interventions for neurodegenerative, neuroimmunological and neuropsychiatric disorders.www.amsterdamresearch.org

Amsterdam Gastroenterology & Metabolism
Our daily energy expenditure has to be sustained by the efficient digestion and metabolism of our diet. The body’s machinery required to manage this task is one of the most important organ systems burdened by disease in the Western World. Diet-induced obesity, diabetes, cancer and chronic inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, pancreas and liver are some of the major illnesses that affect our society. Many of these diseases seem to be associated with a Western diet and lifestyle. Inborn errors of metabolism cause rare diseases that require specialized care but also offer a unique opportunity to study human metabolism in health and disease.
The Amsterdam Gastroenterology Endocrinology Metabolism (AGEM) research institute unites the research at the AMC and VUmc involved at the intersection of nutrition, microbiology, digestion, endocrinology and metabolism. Together we aim to make an important contribution to improve gastrointestinal and metabolic health and reduce the burden of diseases such as colorectal cancer (CRC), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), diabetes mellitus (DM) and phenylketonuria (PKU).
The mission of the AGEM research institute is: ‘to perform research that promotes healthy nutrition and metabolism, prevents or cures gastrointestinal and inherited and acquired metabolic disease and improves the well-being of our patients.’www.amsterdamresearch.org

Amsterdam Movement Sciences
Amsterdam Movement Sciences focuses on human movement, a key issue for today’s society. We approach this from a broad interdisciplinary frame of reference, covering from fundamental to clinical and from cellular to population research. We aim at being world leading in the field of interdisciplinary translational research on human movement and physical performance, and to disseminate our results to patient groups and end-users so that society benefits optimally from our research. We are driven by questions arising from the clinic, society, and from our interest in the nature of the human motor system and human movement. Our research focuses on improving, preserving and restoring the human motor system to allow optimal physical performance in work, sports, ageing and disease, based on fundamental knowledge of underlying mechanisms and principles.
