AI4Cities

2020-2022: AI4Cities brings together leading European cities seeking artificial intelligence (AI) solutions to accelerate the transition to CO2 neutrality.

AI4Cities has challenged the market to come up with AI-based solutions that can help cities reduce CO2 emissions in their energy and mobility sectors. Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Paris, Helsinki, Stavanger, and Tallinn have undergone a pre-commercial procurement process and ultimately selected seven suppliers to test the prototypes developed during the project. Of the seven suppliers, four are working on energy solutions and three on mobility.

AI4Cities, Accelerating Carbon Neutrality

AI4Cities brings together leading European cities at the intersection of smart cities and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, aiming to create new groundbreaking solutions in how AI can support cities in achieving their climate goals. To achieve new, innovative solutions, AI4Cities utilizes 'Pre-commercial procurement,' or PCP. This method is characterized by the ability it gives public institutions to select companies based on predefined principles and requirements. This enables companies to develop their concepts or products more effectively, and public institutions can conduct more efficient procurement, in this case with the aim of reducing greenhouse gases within the energy and mobility sectors through AI.

Ultimately, seven service or product providers were selected within AI4Cities through the PCP procedure:

In the energy sector, BEE helps shift energy consumption in buildings to periods when more renewable energy is available. C-IN.CITY provides cities with a platform for almost real-time management of carbon emissions. HOLONI assists cities in assessing their surplus solar energy, and SPIKE enables a sustainable balance between energy consumption and comfort.

In the mobility sector, AVENUE AI helps cities evaluate the carbon footprint of shared mobility policy measures, while the MPAT TOOL focuses on maximizing the positive effects of these policy measures. IX3 eliminates unnecessary congestion, making urban traffic more efficient and reducing CO2 emissions.
