No space to just 'be'

Verhaal door Chris Elyassi

Ok, here we go! I'd say 1) fix the housing crisis. That means cracking down on people owning more than one property in the city, providing more middle income rentals to avoid people getting stuck in social housing forever, and moving the red light district out of the city center so the neighbourhood becomes habitable again. And 2) more public spaces. In the 5 short years I've been living in this city I've seen a lot of community organized spaces forced to shut down or move far far away. It's becoming increasingly difficult to go out without having to spend money. Even the parks aren't designed to be public spaces what with the absence of public bathrooms, tables, lighting... apart from a few strongholds (the mez being one of them!) there is no space for people to go out and just 'be'.
