Curated ecosystem services of urban informal green spaces
This research investigates how integrated design can enhance the social and environmental value of informal green spaces (IGS)—the often-overlooked patches of nature like vacant lots and neglected urban corners. Despite their unplanned and unmanaged nature, IGS play a vital role in addressing urban challenges such as biodiversity loss, climate change, and public health. As urban land becomes increasingly contested, these interstitial spaces offer critical opportunities for embedding nature within everyday city life. The study explores how spatial design can support ecosystem services like cooling, habitat creation, and community well-being, while preserving the informal character of these spaces. By bridging the gap between the spontaneous qualities of undesigned urban nature and intentional design, the research provides practical tools for urban designers to integrate IGS into a more inclusive, climate-resilient green infrastructure.
