EXPLORING OPPORTUNITIES FOR PLACE-BASED LEARNING ABOUT FOOD ON CURAÇAO
This research studies the potential of Place-Based Learning (PBL) about local food production for children on Curaçao. Curaçao, as a Small Island Development State (SIDS), experiences unique challenges in its food system. Specifically, the heavy dependence of the island on food import has consequences for health, food security, culture, and climate adaptation. Centuries of colonization have contributed to a shift from traditional, locally relevant food practices to a food system driven by import. Raising awareness on the value of local food production is proposed as an approach for facilitating a transition towards a more local food system. The role of Place-Based Learning in education promoting local food production for children’s on Curaçao is investigated. Expert interviews with local educators and food experts, as well as experts on food education, provide insights into the current state of local food production and education on Curaçao, and on the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats for introducing Place-Based Learning to increase awareness of local food production on Curaçao. The results show several opportunities and challenges for introducing PBL, from the unique context of the island related to the five main characteristics of PBL: local context, experiential learning, appreciation of place, co-creating curriculum, and community collaboration. Barriers such as funding limitations, parent’s concerns about outside education, and the need for locally relevant educational materials are highlighted. Opportunities for PBL included the willingness of schools to adopt experiential learning methods, the growing environmental awareness on the island, and Curaçao's influential networking culture which provides opportunities for building collaborative networks centered on environmental and food education. In conclusion, this thesis offers relevant insights into the potential introduction of PBL for enhancing local food production awareness among children in Curaçao. By addressing the local influences, the research lays a foundation for future research on the applicability of PBL and on the development of sustainable and locally relevant educational initiatives.
