Financializing Healthcare and Infrastructures of Social Reproduction
This paper contributes to extending the empirical and conceptual scope of Social Reproduction Theory by bringing it into dialogue with debates on financialization. We call for the need to document and theorize the “lived” dimension of the financialization and marketization of Infrastructures of Social Reproduction, and of the healthcare sector in particular. Our argument draws empirically on the analysis of patient and staff safety and vulnerability issues related to the bankruptcy of the Slotervaart hospital in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Co-production in distributed generation
This review describes the infrastructural elements of the socio-technical system of power supply based on renewables and the role of landscape concerns in decision-making about emerging ‘intelligent grids’. The considerable land areas required for energy infrastructure call for sizable ‘distributed generation’ close to energy consumption. Securing community acceptance of renewables’ infrastructure, perceived impacts on the community, and ‘landscape justice’ requires two types of co-production: in power supply and in making space available.
With co-production, landscape issues are prominent, for some options dominant. However, ‘objectification’ of landscape, such as the use of ‘visibility’ as proxy for ‘visual impact’, is part of lingering centralised and hierarchical approaches to the deployment of renewables. Institutional tendencies of centralisation and hierarchy, in power supply management as well as in siting, should be replaced by co-production, as follows from common pool resources theory. Co-production is the key to respecting landscape values, furthering justice, and achieving community acceptance.Source: Wolsink, M. (2017). Seeing the City
This volume embraces this variety of perspectives and provides an essential collection of methodologies for studying the city from multiple, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary perspectives. We start by recognizing that the complexity of the urban environment cannot be understood from a single vantage point. We therefore offer multiple methodologies in order to gather and analyse data about the city, and provide ways to connect and integrate these approaches.
Altogether, the volume offers indispensable tools for and aims to educate a new generation of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary-minded urban scholars and practitioners.
This book can be downloaded and viewed in full or per chapter by participants of the openresearch platform. Other interested parties can order the book at the Amsterdam University Press.Table of contents:

Urban Circularity and Metabolism
It is almost impossible to disagree that climate change is an urgent issue today, and that cities are at the center of discussions addressing this phenomenon. Environmental sustainability has been a central policy concept for 20 years. Several institutional, legal, and economic reforms have been put in place to favor transition to a system of economic growth that is more sensitive to the long-term future of our planet. Yet, today’s debate is colored through the issues that emerge when this problem is addressed. The role of cities has become extremely prominent in political thinking. Cities are seen as the space where climate change can be mitigated and where adaptation can be experimentally tested and successfully implemented. Climate change remains a global issue, regarding macro balances between developed and developing regions; between wealth and poverty. However, planners and policy analysts look to urban areas for new inspiration. Cities, as composite entities made of different social and economic dynamics, are considered breeding places for creative solutions.

Koppelkansen Traject Water, Energie & Circulariteit

SEPP - Scalable Education Programs Partnership
SEPP in Amsterdam

Urban Europe
In Urban Europe, urban researchers and practitioners based in Amsterdam tell the story of the European city, sharing their knowledge of and insights into urban dynamics in short, thought-provoking pieces. Their essays were collected on the occasion of the adoption of the Pact of Amsterdam with an Urban Agenda for the European Union during the Dutch Presidency of the Council in 2016. The fifty essays gathered in this volume present perspectives from diverse academic disciplines in the humanities and the social sciences. The authors — including the (former) Mayor of Amsterdam, urban activists, civil servants and academic observers — cover a wide range of topical issues, inviting and encouraging us to rethink citizenship, connectivity, innovation, sustainability and representation as well as the role of cities in administrative and political networks.

Volledige boek verkrijgbaar via naibooksellers.nl

Urban Planning (UvA)
Urban Planning research and teaching at the University of Amsterdam focuses on the relationships between the social, spatial, and environmental dimensions of urban processes, and on ways of purposefully and positively impacting on them.
Research
Our approach to research is characterized by the pursuit of an intimate link between theoretical depth and empirical grounding, with a particular emphasis on concept driven, action-orientated research and case study analysis. We aim to develop knowledge that is valuable not only to the academic community, but also has strong social impact, and helps shape urban futures. Key areas of research are: urban governance, critical transport studies, political ecology, urban sustainability and conflict. The empirical field of our research is international in scope, although Amsterdam features prominently as the city in which we are not only located, but also socially immersed and politically engaged. We are institutionally embedded within the Amsterdam Institute of Social Science Research and the Center for Urban Studies at the University of Amsterdam, but our research scope and research collaborations reach out to academic institutions in over twenty countries across the world. Within Amsterdam we have active interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research collaboration with, for example, the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions, the Free University, the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences and the Municipality of Amsterdam.
Teaching
All the staff of the Urban Planning programme group is actively involved in teaching the Bachelors programme in Human Geography and Urban Planning and the Masters Programme in Urban and Regional Planning , and the Masters Research Programme in Urban Studies. These programmes target different student groups, but common to all is that they aim at cultivating in students a both critical and constructive attitude towards different ways of understanding and impacting social, spatial and environmental processes in cities.
-The mission of the Urban Planning group is furthering research and teaching on social, spatial, and environmental processes in cities, their interrelationships, and ways of purposefully and positively impacting on them
-The aim of the Urban Planning group is to contribute to the capacity of cities to cope with urgent social, spatial, and environmental challenges

Urban Geographies (UvA)
Crucial urban transformations and current debates on interrelated social, cultural and economic issues in cities and metropolitan areas form the backdrop for this research.
The aim of the Urban Geographies (UG) programme group is, first of all, to gain better understanding of the diverse and complex mutual relationships between the development of urban spaces and places, time-space behaviour, individual life courses and life chances. Although interesting research topics in themselves, the shared connections between these phenomena are crucial and therefore form the central focus of this programme. Researchers focus on the way spaces and places are affecting social behaviour and social opportunities, as well as how social behaviour and social interactions are creating and reshaping spaces and places. -
