Counting walruses from space

Walruses are facing the realities of the climate crisis and we need to know more about how they are affected. WWF and British Antarctic Survey (BAS) are asking the public to become "walrus detectives" and contribute to conservation science by finding and counting walruses in the thousands of satellite images taken from space.

Over 5 years, the project, conducted in collaboration with scientists around the Arctic, aims to conduct the first-ever census of Atlantic and Laptev walruses using satellite imagery and investigate what might happen to them in the context of rapid climate change. This will help scientists better understand the impact of climate change on populations of this iconic species and secure their future.
