How to cite AI generated text and images?

Generative AI tools like ChatGPT cannot accurately cite their own sources. Any references they provide may be incorrect or non-existent. Therefore, it is wise to always check the original source for any references that are generated. At the time of writing, there is no national, academic or European consensus on citing chatGPT. The openresearch editors have therefore drawn up their own guideline for citing chatGPT on the platform.

Always make sure it is clear to the reader that a text has been generated by chatGPT in part or in full. This can be stated at the start of the text: output chatGPT. In addition, chatGPT should also be cited as a source. Below is more information about how to quote chatGPT on openresearch.amsterdam.

Making AI transparent is important for the editors of open research to ensure the correctness and reliability of their findings. Transparency allows us to better understand how AI systems work and what data they use to reach conclusions. This not only increases the accuracy of the results, but also the credibility of the research and strengthens public confidence in the applications of AI technologies.
