The new way to login

From now on you can easily log in to openresearch thanks to single sign-on

Together with its partners and editors openresearch continues to develop. To improve the keywords, the search engine or the user-friendliness of the platform. The latest development – the implementation of single sign-on (SSO) software – is an excellent example of the latter. It's a development we are proud of, because it is the result of the collaboration between the municipality and knowledge institutions in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area. We explain more about this in the FAQs down below.

What is single sign-on (SSO)?

SSO is software that enables accessing multiple (web) applications by only logging in once. If you are logged in within the work-enviroment of your organization, you can use openresearch directly in all its different layers. If you work from outside this server, please use your organization's login details to access the platform.

What will change for me?

Do you work at the UvA, HvA (AUAS), VU or the municipality of Amsterdam? In these cases, you no longer have to use and remember separate login details for openresearch. This means you can log in with the same username and password as you use to log in to the organization you work for. For this, you don't have to adjust anything, because it's automated. Are you also an editor and do you publish articles on openresearch? In this case, you only need the two-factor authorization (app) that you also use to log in to your organization. The DUO-mobile app or Google Authenticator you used particulary for openresearch before are no longer applicable.

What are the benefits of SSO?

Besides the fact that you don't have to remember separate login credentials, there are other advantages as well. Due to SSO it is safer to become part of the knowledge network of more than 180 editors. The new way of logging in also enables to easily create an account yourself, without the intervention of the main editors of openresearch (the Chief Science Office of the City of Amsterdam). The main editors will of course remain available for login-related and other questions.

Who were involved in the implementation of SSO?

The realization of SSO has been coordinated and aligned with the Information Security departments of the HvA (AUAS), VU and UvA and the Municipality of Amsterdam. Involved were a project leader in the field of information supply, various Privacy & Security Officers, Driebit (the developer and server host of open research), Sogeti, ONVIO, the Chief Science Office of the Municipality of Amsterdam and SURFconext.

The connection from the openresearch platform  to the knowledge institutions is executed via SURFconext. Openresearch is implementing the connection to SURFconext in phases. This means that not all Amsterdam knowledge institutions and government organizations that are partners of openresearch are connected to SSO. In the near future, it will be explored with other partners whether connection to SSO is desirable.
