Amsterdam is growing toward a population of one million, and more and more people are working and living in our city. To keep the city affordable, economically strong, and livable, the city government has set goals in the areas of housing, the energy transition, digitization, mobility, and the city’s economic development. To make all of this possible, the electricity infrastructure must be modernized in the coming years.
The growing demand for electricity means that the grid’s transmission capacity must also increase. After all, the electricity the city needs must be transmitted. To achieve this, grid operators TenneT and Lianders must build many new substations and upgrade existing ones. And, of course, they must lay new connections to properly link all the substations together. All of this must be done while the system remains fully operational. Life in the city goes on; there must always be power.
The Amsterdam Electricity Supply Program is tackling this long-term and costly challenge in collaboration with colleagues within the City of Amsterdam and in consultation with the city’s residents and businesses. To accomplish this task as quickly and effectively as possible, the City of Amsterdam is working with the grid operators TenneT and Liander, the Port of Amsterdam, and the Amsterdam Grid Congestion Task Force.
