MSc Thesis AMS Institute - Perceived Safety of Women in Sustainable Mobility Environments

MADE Student Project

This thesis aims to jump the mobility gap between men and women when it comes to perceived safety in transportation by exploring a feminist approach to measuring perceived safety of women in the sustainable mobility environment. The thesis does so by exploring a feminist composite measure (perceived safety index) based on the analysis of indicators in the built environment that allows for measuring perceived safety of women in urban areas at scale. This method is then applied to a case study of Amsterdam’s sustainable mobility environment, to validate and calibrate the approach, and to enhance the understanding of the relation between the built environment and perceived safety of women that might confirm existing theories, produce new insight or identify areas that need further research.
