Less light pollution from IJtunnel to Amstelplein

Reducing unnecessary light in Amsterdam from IJtunnel to Amstelplein

This report was commissioned by the Amsterdam Green Campus. The issue was drawn up by the Municipality of Amsterdam and the Business Investment Zone (BIZ) Knowledge Mile. The latter two parties are working to make the street from the IJtunnel via Valkenburgerstraat, Weesperstraat and Wibautstraat to Amstelplein more sustainable and greener. One of the issues involved is how light pollution can be reduced. The main question of this report is: 'How can the lighting of companies on the city street (From IJtunnelValkenburgerstraat via Weesperstraat to Amstelplein) in Amsterdam be reduced in order to combat light pollution without affecting safety and atmosphere?'

The purpose of this research is to provide advice to companies and the municipality to reduce light pollution in the area. The focus of the research is on schools, office buildings, catering and hotels, but the advice given can also be applied to street lighting and that is why street lighting is also examined. In this study, light pollution is defined as the negative effects that organisms experience due to artificial light at night, or ALAN (artificial light at night).
