Drought and flooding (WUR)

The climate in the Netherlands is changing and there is a real chance that the future will become drier. The summer of 2018 was one of the driest in decades and 2019 and 2020 were also dry. The consequences of this drought for agriculture, nature and quality of life are being investigated by Wageningen University & Research.

Climate change is not only increasing global temperatures, precipitation patterns are also changing. In the Netherlands we notice that flooding occurs more often due to heavy rain showers. In urban areas, streets are more often flooded and this causes the necessary nuisance. Wageningen University & Research studies the causes of heavy precipitation and is looking for solutions to deal with this phenomenon. For example, more greenery in the city: this ensures that water can be drained more quickly to the ground. Water storage is also important, because not only is the number of heavy showers increasing, periods of drought are also becoming longer.

In this collection you will find research by Wageningen University & Research into drought and flooding.
