The basics in one article (reading time: 10-30 min)
Renovating existing buildings is often primarily about improving the quality of the indoor environment and the energy performance of the building. When we renovate without taking into account the embedded CO2 impact of the materials used, we continue to mop the floor. We save energy and emissions in the use phase, but unnecessarily emit greenhouse gases for the building materials and products used in renovation. In exchange for better energy performance, we create new problems of resource consumption and climate change. Therefore, the energy transition and embedded environmental impact of building materials cannot be separated.
