MSc Thesis - Roof Buzz: The relation between pollinator diversity and green roof characteristics

By Marco Tanis (Leiden University)

Insect populations worldwide have declined, with urbanization as one of the major drivers. Green roofs could provide suitable habitat for insect in urban areas; however, which factors, such as forage availability, structure and the surroundings of the roof, affect insect pollinators on green roofs remains unclear, while being important knowledge for designing pollinator friendly green roofs. Thus, this research tries to answer a) which factors concerning green roofs affect pollinator species richness, abundance and functional richness? and b) if there is a difference between which factors are important between pollinators with and without a nest.
