Handbook - Materials

This chapter describes numerous measures and presents the resulting details that focus on materials in public space and the accompanying subsurface space, as well as on adjacent buildings.

Until recently, it was customary to use completely new raw materials in the design of public space. Any reuse that did occur was limited to inferior applications such as rubble granulate beneath road surfaces or plastic bollards. However, recent years have seen a rapid growth in the reuse of high-quality materials, and dozens of new products have come on the market.

Such circular measures can be broadly divided into two categories: retrieving raw materials from public space and deploying retrieved materials in public space. The first category mainly concerns measures at area level. The second category is characterized by the use of bio-based materials, recycled synthetics and stone-like materials.

In the case of each detail in the extensive selection of circular measures and resulting details, the raw material is identified and the way it is processed into a new and usable product is explained. Instead of the section drawings used for other themes, this theme is illustrated with photographs of products.

The market in circular products is still relatively new and evolving rapidly. Gathering the latest information (online and from companies) about available products is recommended in each design assignment. Many materials used in public space in Amsterdam are purchased centrally, so designers are not completely free in their choices. However, it is municipal policy to make the centralized purchasing strategy more sustainable in a step-by-step manner.
