The implementation of LIFE BIOMATINE is made possible through collaboration between several organizations, each bringing their own expertise and role within the project:
Lieven de Key
The housing association Lieven de Key is improving the sustainability of many existing social rental homes, including historic buildings. In collaboration with the partners of LIFE BIOMATINE, 557 social rental homes with listed status are being insulated in an innovative and sustainable way. The knowledge and experience gained are applied in other urban sustainability projects.
BOEi
This non-profit organization focuses on the restoration and adaptive reuse of cultural heritage. One of their projects involves the Centrale Markthal in Amsterdam, a national monument dating from 1934. The 8,000 m2 roof is in poor condition. Through LIFE BIOMATINE, the existing Bims concrete slabs on the interior of the roof are being replaced with a bio-based composite: a sustainable, low-maintenance, and architecturally suitable alternative.
De Groene Grachten
De Groene Grachten plays a central role in this project as the engineer and project manager of the demonstration projects, including the Tasmanblokken and the Centrale Markthal. The organization assesses the technical, financial, and legal feasibility of bio-based insulation and supports its implementation, aiming to identify and address process barriers in a timely manner.
Structural Collective
Structural Collective works as a researcher and advisor for cities striving to thrive within planetary boundaries. Within LIFE BIOMATINE, the organization disseminates knowledge from pilot projects, develops an impact monitor, and examines the potential of bio-based insulation materials across Europe. The results are shared with property managers, housing associations, and municipalities.
Building Balance
Building Balance is a national non-profit organization implementing the National Approach to Bio-Based Construction (NABB). The program initiates, stimulates, and supports regional and national value chains – from land to building. By connecting chain projects, consolidating knowledge, and creating enabling conditions, it facilitates scaling up and accelerates the transition to a circular and bio-based construction economy.
Municipality of Amsterdam
The municipality aims to reduce CO₂ emissions by 55% by 2030 and by 95% by 2050. The use of non-renewable materials is to be halved by 2030, with full circularity as the goal by 2050. Over the coming years, more than 100,000 homes will be insulated to reduce fossil energy use. The knowledge gained from LIFE BIOMATINE will be applied within the city’s renovation program. The municipality coordinates the project and its communication.
