Research and Statistics is celebrating its 130th anniversary this year. To mark the occasion, we are giving the city a gift: easy and quick access to many of the figures we have collected over all these years.
On October 10, 1894, the Municipal Bureau of Statistics began collecting and publishing figures about Amsterdam. One of the bureau's tasks was to publish a Statistical Yearbook. The first yearbook contained figures for the year 1895. In 2019, the last yearbook was published. Since then we have been publishing statistics about the city on the website onderzoek.amsterdam.nl.
The 104 yearbooks contain a wealth of information. Based on figures, they tell about the development of Amsterdam. The big stories about the growth, decline and then increase of the population, the undulations of the economy and the perils of the housing and labor market. But also smaller stories, for example about the decline of infectious diseases, the introduction of the telephone in Amsterdam and the number of accidents caused by stampeding horses.
The old yearbooks were already available as pdf files. With the help of artificial intelligence, the more than 28 thousand pages are now integrally searchable. An increasing proportion of the figures are available as digital tables and can be downloaded. This makes it possible to create new, long-term time series, for example. Also, historical developments can now be easily visualized in maps and graphs, for example on the number of establishments, housing stock and population.
